Neurotoxins 101: How to Decide Which is Right for You

Neurotoxins have become a new basic in your cosmetic toolbox—almost as indispensable as moisturizer or mascara! That’s because they’re a safe way to smooth out lines for a more youthful look. Here at FINETUNE MedSpa, we offer the full array of injectables: Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. Which should you choose? Here’s a rundown of each product’s benefits to help you decide.

First there was Botox, the original of what’s technically known as a neurotoxin. The fine print in a Botox® Cosmetic ad explains its chemical properties, with elements like “OnabotuabotulinnumtoxinA,” designed to treat “glabellar lines.” In much simpler terms, that means Botox works to improve moderate to severe frown lines. Since Botox was introduced, other products have gained FDA approval in the neurotoxin field — specifically, Dysport and Xeomin. Do they work differently from Botox?

How long do their cosmetics results last? Are there other factors to consider? It helps to understand that Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin all work by blocking the signal of nerve impulses to particular facial muscles. So muscles can’t contract in the way that cause wrinkles, leaving you with a smoother appearance where lines used to be.  The results from these injectables are temporary, and can vary from product to product and patient to patient. So that’s where Botox, Dyport and Xeomin are similar. Here are some ways the products differ from one another:

Botox works effectively to smooth our moderate to severe frown lines, such as a furrowed brow, as well as crows’ feet around the eyes. You’ll see results in 7 to 10 days after a Botox injection, and effects typically last about 4 months.

By contrast, Dysport offers quicker results, with an improved appearance in as little as 2-3 days. Dysport also tends to have more “spread” than Botox, which can be preferable if you want to treat a larger area of the face, such as the forehead. But because it does tend to spread, Dysport should only be administered by a trained expert who’s well-versed in using the product, as all our professionals at FINETUNE MedSpa are. (When you’re treating particularly delicate facial areas, you don’t want Dysport to spread where it doesn’t belong.)

Xeomin, the newest neurotoxin of the three, was originally introduced for a strictly medical use, to treat a rare condition called cervical dystonia that affects the neck and Shoulders. Doctors realized it also helped eradicate facial lines, in much the same way as Botox and Dysport. Unlike these products, Xeomin does not have to be refrigerated, so it’s more convenient to store and distribute. And it has no additives, which can be a plus for patients concerned about sensitivities to other formulas. You’ll see results from Xeomin in about a week, and they’re likely to last from 3 to 6 months.

If you’re considering Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, realize all three are safe and effective. All three will give you a more youthful, stunning look. And all three are available at FINETUNE MedSpa. So call us today to discuss which option will result in a more beautiful you!
